FEEDING
An old saying that is often repeated in the greyhound
world is that "an ounce of breeding is worth a pound
of feeding".Whilst the sentiments of this are true even
the best breeding in the world can be wasted in pups
that aren't fed properly. Here at Drumscraw the most
important part of our daily routine is our food preparation
and feeding. All foodstuff we use is human consumption
grade produce and supplied from traceable and
reputable sources.
From weaning till 3 months old our young pups are fed
4 times a day, beginning with a sloppy stew of mashed
biscuit and cooked mince moving slowly onto the diet
that the older pups are fed.The pups from 3 months to
6 months of age are fed twice a day,in the morning
cereal and milk and in the afternoon biscuit and what
ever meat is being served on the day mixed with a
hearty vegetable broth. From 6 months old until
kennelling, normally around 12 months old, the
saplings are fed once a day, in the afternoon time. Their diet is the same as the younger pups but
proportionally larger to meet their requirements. All our pups from 3 months old are fed individually
to ensure they receive a sufficient share.
After kennelling we feed twice a day. Breakfast is
based around cereal, wholegrain only and soaked
in warm water. Twice a week we add sardines to
this and twice a week an egg. This is fed first thing
at around 7am. We try to keep to a rigid routine
wherever possible.
The main meal of the day is fed at 3pm. A 28% protein
biscuit base soaked in warm water mixed with the
meat of the day. Once a week this will be diced chicken
fillets, fish or lambs hearts. The remainder of the week
it will be prime beef with 25%fat content.Everyday we
make a vegetable broth with a nice shank bone for stock. The variety of vegetables is wide including turnips,
parsnips, carrots, swedes, potatoes, lettuce, celery,
garlic, onion and cauliflower. To this we add a multi-
vitamin, linseed oil and calcium supplement to ensure
that all dietary needs are met.
Everyone has a different opinion on what to feed dogs. What we do at Drumscraw is take the very best quality
foodstuffs available,prepare them hygienically and
feed them in sufficient amounts to ensure that all the
dogs in our care are given the best possible chance
to fulfil their potential.
Nothing left to chance.
